Majority don’t want Helensburgh pier supermarket
Most of you don’t want to see a supermarket built on the Helensburgh Pier but would like a leisure centre, according to a survey of more than 12,000 residents.
The questionnaire, by Helensburgh Community council, found that just over half of those surveyed were opposed to a supermarket on the pier head, 40% wanted it and 10% were uncertain.
Three-quarters said that the design in making the landmark site something which Helensburgh can be proud of was very important.
Yet, only 19% said that they would use their local shops less if a supermarket was on the pier.
Asked what else they would like to see on the pier head site, popular answers included a leisure centre, museum/heritage, gardens - landscaped / pedestrian area and restaurant / bistro.
