Helensburgh masterplans approved based on public consultations
The masterplans for two of the highest profile development sites in Helensburgh have been approved by councillors.
The documents, which will inform any future proposals for the pier head and former Hermitage Academy sites, were revised following a period of public consultation.
In response to the views of the vast majority of those who took part in the consultation, the pier head masterplan now shows a swimming pool and leisure centre on the site, with no large supermarket.
Under these plans there would also be some low-level mixed retail units set back from West Clyde Street, with no requirement for residential units.
The masterplan for the former Hermitage Academy site retains it for both affordable and private housing, although there is still scope for a swimming pool and leisure facility to be built there as a contingency
The pier head masterplan will now go out for a further period of public consultation due to the level of alterations.
The former Hermitage Academy document has been formally adopted, as there was little material change to the original plan.
Argyll and Bute Council’s depute leader, Councillor Ellen Morton, who represents the Helensburgh and Lomond South area, said the public consultation had had a major impact on the future of the pier head.
She said: “The amendments made were very significant, but accurately reflected what the majority of those who took part told us they wanted to see.
“Most people in Helensburgh and the surrounding area simply did not want to see a large supermarket , residential units or a petrol station on the pier head site, so that was reflected in the revised plan.
“This just goes to show how those members of the public who engage in consultation such as this can shape the future of their environment.
“We as a council have listened to what people have told us, and have adjusted the plans accordingly.”
The pier head document shows additional pedestrian space and improved landscaping and public realm works, as well as car and coach parking and drop off and pick up points for buses, taxis and cars.
Helensburgh Central councillor and chairman of the Helensburgh CHORD project board, Councillor Gary Mulvaney, said: “These two documents are absolutely key in the future development of Argyll and Bute’s biggest town, and it is vital that they reflect what the majority of those who live in, work in and visit Helensburgh would most like to see.
“Based on the feedback we received from the many, many people who took part in the recent consultation, I am delighted that this has been achieved.
“Now that we have documents of which the local community can take ownership, I very much look forward to all those with an interest in Helensburgh’s future development working together to ensure that the pier head becomes the vibrant and attractive location it promises to be.
“This is a very exciting time for Helensburgh, and I am confident that these masterplans – together with the CHORD works and other major developments – will prove the catalyst for a period of sustained regeneration and economic growth.”
The Executive has also asked council officers to develop a procurement strategy and project delivery plan which will generate options for the replacement of the existing swimming pool and leisure centre in accordance with the revised masterplans.
